MEANS Database Launches Crowdfunding Campaign to Help Feed Hurricane Maria’s 50,000 Refugees in Florida by Recovering Unsold Food Nearby

MEANS Database aims to strengthen their proven food recovery platform, that has recovered over 1.65 million pounds of food nationwide, and support Puerto Rican refugees

Washington, DC: – MEANS Database, a nonprofit tech startup that fights food waste, announced this week that it is raising funds, via a tax-deductible crowdfunding campaign on GlobalGiving, to strengthen their proven food recovery platform in Florida. MEANS set out to raise $8,000 on GlobalGiving by March 30th midnight Eastern time to expand their platform to support the over 50,000 Hurricane Maria refugees who have left Puerto Rico for Florida.

The vast majority of these refugees left with little more than the clothes on their backs, and very few have been able to access the government social services they are legally entitled to as U.S. citizens. They are relying on emergency food providers who are struggling to meet the need.

30% of food in the United States is thrown out before it reaches someone’s table. Florida has 48,000 farms spread across 9.5 million acres and a thriving restaurant scene. Miami alone has 3,615 restaurants. Redirecting that unsold food could feed all the refugees in Florida and more. That’s why MEANS is calling on the community to support their expansion in Florida. Their system will allow food producers to use their smartphone, tablet, or computer to post their unsold food and instantly notify nearby emergency food providers via email or text message.
